BREAKING: The Obamas’ production company fetches 7 Emmy nominations

TheHill reports former President Obama and Michelle Obama’s production company has earned seven Emmy nominations this year between its acclaimed “American Factory” and “Becoming” documentaries.

American Factory, which follows the story of a factory in Ohio after it’s reopened by a Chinese billionaire, was nominated for three categories: Outstanding Picture Editing For A Nonfiction Program, Outstanding Cinematography For A Nonfiction Program and Outstanding Directing For A Documentary/Nonfiction Program.

Becoming, which hit Netflix months back and captured the former first lady’s experiences during her book tour promoting her autobiography under the same name, scored four nominations: Outstanding Directing For A Documentary/Nonfiction Program, Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, Outstanding Cinematography For A Nonfiction Program and Outstanding Music Composition For A Documentary Series Or Special.

The nominations come several months after American Factory, which was the first from the Obamas’ production company, Higher Ground Productions, to make it to Netflix, landed an Oscar for best documentary feature in February.

The seven Emmy nods, which were announced on Tuesday, are also among the 160 nominations Netflix raked in overall. According to The New York Times, the staggering figure is the highest any network has ever received.

In a statement remarking on the recent nominations for Becoming, Nadia Hallgren, who directed the project, told Entertainment Tonight that “the opportunity to share the story of Michelle Obama, the first Black First Lady, is bigger than anything I could have dreamed.”

“Releasing Becoming during this particular moment in history added an unexpected and an even deeper meaning to it all. Thank you to the Television Academy for this recognition, and thank you to our collaborators at Higher Ground Productions and Netflix. Our team is honored to receive this very special nomination!” she added.
